A breakout is more convincing when it comes on heavy volume — a sign that real buyers, not just a quiet drift, are behind the move. Ice Juice Trading's Volume Surge template automates a volume-confirmed breakout on your own Alpaca account — it buys 20-day highs that print on at least twice the average volume. You set the risk limits; it runs on paper first. No code.
Price breakouts fail all the time. One classic filter is volume: a new high accompanied by a surge in trading activity suggests genuine demand and conviction, while a breakout on light volume is more likely to fizzle. Requiring a volume surge is a way to skip the weakest breakouts and act only when participation confirms the move.
Enter when the price makes a new 20-day high and volume is at least 2× its 20-day average.
The 20-day high is the breakout; the 2× average-volume condition is the confirmation. Both must be true on the same day. Every knob is yours to set: dollars per position, stop-loss %, maximum open positions, and profit-taking rules — or point the same rule at your own basket of tickers.
Volume-confirmed breakouts tend to do well when strong names are being accumulated and breaking to new highs; they can still fail in choppy markets, and a big volume spike sometimes marks a short-term blow-off rather than a durable move. As always, the confirmation filter is meant to improve the odds — it doesn't remove the need for stops and disciplined sizing.
In our own 3-year backtest, the built-in Volume Surge template won 65.3% of 340 trades. Those results are hypothetical, don't reflect actual trading, and past performance does not guarantee future results. Use the built-in backtester to run it over history on your own basket, then paper-trade it live on simulated money before risking real capital.
